Alkanes

18.  O/N 2017/P11/Q35

Compounds S and T both contain two elements only. The compounds have the following properties.

● They both burn in air to form carbon dioxide and water only.

● They both react with chlorine by substitution.

● S has a higher boiling point than T.

What could compounds S and T be?

Answer:  C

Explaination

Both compounds S and T are belongs to alkane family as the given properties of alkanes are :

Alkane reacts with O2 to form CO2 and H2O in complete combustion. Alkane react with Cl2 or Br2 in substitution reaction.

Propane has higher boiling point than ethane because of long HC chain. Hence, T is ethane and S is propane.
